Holidays in Majorca can be very different depending on the area of the island that you choose to stay. The wide range of accommodation possibilities is very similar all over the island, but the atmosphere can radically change between the north and south, the area of Calvia or Playa de Palma. Choosing is very complicated, especially if you have no knowledge of the municipalities of the island, as each one has a very different holiday proposal.
Then, it is usual that many people end up booking a hotel in Playa de Palma, thinking that it is a beach area just one step from the city, or that many others choose a hotel in the Palma centre thinking that the capital is surrounded by paradise beaches just next to the built-up area. Although there is some truth in it: Palma has beach, and the beach is just a few kilometres away from the centre. Holiday is totally opposite in one place or another.
Booking a hotel in Playa de Palma is ideal if you do not care about the kind of beach or of you want something comfortable, close to everything, with a good (especially German) atmosphere to go out at night. Similarly, there are destinations like Magaluf and Palma Nova, except that in these two cases, most of the tourists are British and the night atmosphere is even livelier than Palma’s.
Nearby, we can find interesting and less heavily attended options. One of them booking a hotel in Illetas, one step from Marivent Palace, where you will have on hand beautiful caves surrounded by the typically Mediterranean nature, and you will be even more close to the Palma city. Although the hotel offer is maybe smaller than in other areas, hotels in Illetas are first class and prices, in high season, are not cheap. Nevertheless, sometimes it is worth paying a bit extra for enjoying the holiday the way we want to.
If we follow the coast towards Calvià, avoiding the noisy Magaluf, we could find ideal corners to lodge, specially for a holiday with family in Majorca. A good option, really inexpensive, is booking a hotel in Torrenova, the quietest area of Palma Nova, where you can live the entire Mediterranean beach atmosphere without suffering the typical crowd of this tourism area.
Other interesting alternative to book a hotel in Majorca is the north: Playa de Muro, Alcudia, Puerto Pollensa… The entire northern coast of the island is a wonder, specially if you are looking for a sun, beach and nature holiday. The water sports, hiking and byclicle tourism count on some of the best schools and routes in this Majorca area. However, lodging in the north implies being one hour away from the airport and the capital, so it is not very practical. Hotel offer is very specialised: sportsmen’s hotels, spa hotels, family hotels…Choose the best to meet your plans, it will be a plus.
¿And the eastern coast of Majorca? Cala Millor, Sa Coma, Costa de los Pinos or Canyamel are some of the most valued tourism points. Now, they are made for those who want to live a holiday at the beach’s edge without complicating yourself going across the island. A really beautiful island but not precisely the best connected with the rest of Majorca, the distance to the airport can even be about one hour and a half by car if you stay in Cala Ratjada, one of the tourism towns par excellence in Majorca that is precisely on the north-eastern part of the island.
